Peace and love est une expression de la langue anglaise signifiant paix et amour, employée comme signe de reconnaissance dans les années 1960 par les hippies, et à laquelle est associée le symbole de la paix.

Aujourd'hui, « il (ou elle) est peace and love » est une expression utilisée pour désigner le comportement d'une personne décontractée, dont le look rappelle les mouvances new age et hippie, ou étant pacifiste.

L'expression a été particulièrement employée dans les années 1960 pour désigner les contestataires œuvrant pacifiquement contre la Guerre du Vietnam.

Le symbole associé a été inventé par le graphiste britannique Gerald Holtom lors d'une manifestation en 1958 contre une usine d'armement nucléaire. Dans ce symbole on peut apercevoir en langage sémaphore (utilisé dans la marine britannique) un N et un D qui sont les initiales de Nuclear Disarmament (Désarmement Nucléaire).

Pour certains, le signe à l'intérieur du cercle représente également une rune de l'alphabet Futhark [1] .

Ce n'est que plus tard, dans les années 1970 que ce symbole a été repris par le mouvement hippie pour les raisons évoquées au-dessus
